Shaping Futures: Enrique Noguera's Dedication to Education and Community Empowerment

Boys to Men

In countries all around the world, there is a clear separation between boyhood and manhood. Manhood is earned through a coming of age process that boys must undergo. In the United States, outside of specific ethnic groups, that line is not clearly defined. In this workshop, we will explore what it means to be a man in our society. We will unpack the associated social and emotional perceptions. We will leave students to question those assumptions and challenge them to adopt new meanings of manhood.

Hip Hop and Masculinity

Hip-hop is a musical art form that was started in the Bronx, New York in the early 1970’s to take aim at the cultural forces of poverty, racism, and discrimination. Today, it is a worldwide cultural phenomenon that reaches billions of people through fashion, movies, social media and sports. Though there are elements of the culture that are progressive, popular hip-hop has become deeply rooted in misogyny, homophobia, and hyper-aggression.

This workshop will ultimately challenge students to reflect on the dynamics of masculinity through expressions of strength, vulnerability, service, and love.

Developing & Maintaining Healthy Relationships

In this workshop students will examine the characteristics of healthy relationships with their peers. Participants will consider how to establish and maintain balance between academic studies, intimate relationships, social relationships, recreation, and time alone. We will discuss the importance of boundaries, assertive communication, and staying connected during this time of social distancing and self-isolation.

Habit Mastery

Habits are the building blocks of who we are as people in society. This workshop is designed to help students understand the importance of positive habit formation. It provides them with a process to identify the elements of a habit so that they can sustain or reprogram the habit. As they transition from adolescence to adulthood, it is advantageous for students to become habit masters who can foster the attraction of personal and professional growth opportunities.

Level Up Your Self-Esteem

In this workshop, students will explore how family life, peer experience, popular conceptions of manhood, and a person’s self-talk impact self-esteem. We go further by explaining how developing a high self-esteem can result in favorable academic and professional outcomes. Students will learn strategies for increasing self-confidence with a special focus on communication and presentation style.

It’s Best to Stress Less

This workshop will provide a space for students to acknowledge common stressors that they experience as college students. Students will learn about a typical stress response and ways to identify and internally counteract this response. We will discuss the impact of stress on our wellbeing and work with students to develop plans to cope with stress.

Financial Freedom, Stewardship, and Planning

This workshop will focus on how students can start their careers after college focused on short term and long-term financial plans that grow their net worth. Participants will discuss how their money habits are developed at a young age and can affect how they view money as spenders, savers, or investors. Participants will also delve into the cultural history of discriminatory lending practices and other reasons why people of color are sometimes reluctant to invest. Participants will be introduced to financial concepts including credit, debt, budgeting, mutual funds, and money market accounts.
